Hillcrest

The owners of this 1937 Lannon stone Colonial wanted a more functional and up-to-date kitchen that would suit their family’s busy lifestyle. Rather than removing a wall, they opted to retain the original layout of a dining room at the front of the house and a kitchen at the back. We took the kitchen down to the studs and did some reframing of the inside wall to accommodate the new plans but left the original footprint intact. A custom-designed and -built island created more countertop and storage space while permitting enough clearance and a place for guests to gather.

New oaks floors were stained to match the rest of the house, and other touches aligned current-day conveniences with the home’s vintage aesthetic: floating shelves for decorative items, niches for oil bottles, a food-bowl nook for their pet dog Lola, and a place to sip coffee in the morning. An onyx stain for the island and shelves provides a pleasing contrast to the white wood and marble.
