Located in Shorewood, this kitchen renovation reflects a common challenge we see across Milwaukee’s North Shore neighborhoods. Many homes have great locations and solid footprints, but their layouts no longer support how people live today. In this Shorewood bungalow, the focus wasn’t just on updating finishes, but on improving functionality.
The kitchen had been updated over time, but it remained closed off and aesthetically disconnected from the rest of the first floor and lacked the space, storage, and flow needed for everyday use. This renovation reworked the footprint by opening up the layout and introducing a large central island. The result is more workspace, better storage, and a more communal kitchen that supports the homeowners family routines.
The Starting Point: A Closed-Off Kitchen with Limited Function
The original layout separated the kitchen from the dining room with a full wall and relied on a narrow hallway to connect the spaces, making the entire first floor feel smaller and more constrained than it actually was. While the footprint wasn’t necessarily small, the configuration limited natural light, reduced usable workspace, and disrupted the flow between rooms.
Key challenges included:
- Limited countertop space for cooking and gathering
- Insufficient storage for a growing family
- A layout that disrupted flow between rooms on the first floor
- Visual and structural fragmentation from past remodels
The Design Solution: Reworking the Layout for Function
The solution centered on opening up the kitchen to the dining room and rebuilding the layout to better support daily use. Removing the wall between the two spaces allowed them to function as one continuous area.
From there, the design focused on how the kitchen could work more efficiently. A large central island was introduced to anchor the space, providing room for prep, seating, and gathering. Perimeter cabinetry was reconfigured to improve workflow and maximize storage, while circulation paths were simplified to create easier movement between the kitchen, dining, and adjacent living areas like a homework work station.
Several structural and architectural adjustments further enhanced the space. A window along the kitchen wall was raised to allow for continuous countertops and cabinetry below, unlocking additional storage and workspace.
A new arched opening was also incorporated to create a more intentional transition between spaces, replicating doorway details found throughout the rest of the home and maintaining visual continuity.
Kitchen Design + Material Selections
With the layout reworked, the design focused on creating a kitchen that feels cohesive, functional, and layered with intentional detail.
The perimeter cabinetry is finished in a light, neutral tone, bringing warmth to the space while keeping the palette clean and modern. This allows the flooring to remain consistent with the rest of the first floor, reinforcing a sense of continuity throughout the home. The island, painted in Benjamin Moore Miramichi, introduces a rich, grounded focal point that defines the center of activity and complements the forest-inspired wallpaper in the adjacent study nook.
A built-in desk area was integrated into the cabinetry, creating a dedicated homework station for the homeowners’ sons. It’s a thoughtful addition that supports daily routines while keeping the kitchen connected and communal.
Gold accents are carried throughout in the hardware, plumbing, and lighting, adding contrast and consistency across each zone of the kitchen.
Material selections balance durability with texture. Quartz countertops provide a clean, resilient work surface, while the backsplash introduces subtle variation through a hand-crafted zellige tile in a straight stack pattern. Together, these elements keep the space feeling refined without becoming overly formal.
Functionality is integrated into every design decision. A farmhouse sink is centered beneath the window and flanked by expanded countertop space, creating a highly usable prep zone filled with natural light. The range wall is anchored by a custom hood with a subtle gold accent band, while the textured yet neutral tile backdrop adds visual interest without competing with the overall palette.
