home renovation FAQs

How long does a home renovation take from design to completion?

Most of our renovations take approximately 6 to 12 months from initial design to completion. Your timeline depends on the number of spaces involved, design complexity, permitting, material availability and construction scope.

Can I live in my home during a kitchen remodel or whole home renovation?

Often, yes. Whether you can stay in your home depends on the scope of construction and access to essential spaces, including bathrooms and cooking facilities. During a kitchen remodel, we can help plan a temporary kitchen setup to make daily routines more manageable.

How can I stay connected and track my home renovation project with Story Hill Renovations?

Story Hill Renovations uses a cloud-based construction app called BuilderTrend to help manage your project. This app connects us with everyone involved in your project and keeps you, the homeowner, connected day and night. What makes Story Hill Renovations different from other Milwaukee remodeling contractors?

Story Hill Renovations brings design, construction and furnishings together under one team. We specialize in updating older Milwaukee-area homes with thoughtful layouts, quality craftsmanship and details that respect the home’s original character. Our approach includes:

  • In-house design: Plans, layouts and selections developed around your home and the way you live.
  • Coordinated construction: Designers and project managers working together from planning through completion.
  • Custom details: Cabinetry, millwork and storage tailored to your spaces.
  • Clear communication: Project schedules, selections and invoices accessible through Buildertrend.
  • Furnishings services: Furniture, window treatments and finishing touches to bring the completed rooms together.

CAN I FINANCE MY HOME RENOVATION OR COMPLETE THE WORK IN PHASES?

Story Hill Renovations does not provide financing directly, but we can connect you with a lending resource to discuss your options. Some homeowners use home equity financing or other loans arranged through their lender.

If you are considering renovating in phases, we can discuss whether that approach makes sense for your project. The best sequence depends on how the spaces connect, shared structural or mechanical work, and the cost and disruption of separate construction phases.

Do I need permits for a home renovation in Milwaukee or the surrounding suburbs?

Renovations require permits, particularly when the work involves structural changes, electrical systems, plumbing or heating and cooling. Requirements depend on your municipality and the scope of the project.

Story Hill Renovations manages the permitting and inspection process for our projects. We regularly work with local departments in Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Glendale, Fox Point and Brookfield, coordinating the approvals and inspections required for your renovation.
